H20 Chelsea Water Research Program - Our Goal: "To develop a better understanding of ground and surface water resources in Chelsea that will inform municipal planning and management descisions."

Day 1

Introduction to Water Study

Introduce the topic of water by explaining that you will be studying water for the next several weeks.  Read students the following five facts about water:  (5 min)

***Human beings cannot survive without clean, safe water to drink.
***Only one half of 1% of the water on the planet is drinkable.
***The water supply is finite.  As our population continues to grow out of control, the
      amount of available water diminishes.
***1.3 billion people on the planet do not have access to clean drinking water right now
***Four thousand people die each day from water borne diseases.

  • Put students in groups and have them brainstorm everything they know about water.  Write on a sheet of paper.  (15 min)
  • Introduce page with Headings and have students sort their ideas under the headings.  (15 min)
  • Suggested headings are:  Pollution, Conservation, Export of Bulk Water, Global issues, properties of Water, Water Quality, Water Treatment, Bottled Water, Floods and Droughts, Hydrologic Cycle, Human Body, Hydroelectricity, Wetlands.Chart information and post ideas for class discussion.  (15 min)
  • Conclude lesson by listening to Rosie Emery’s, “We are All Interconnected”.  Review the lyrics.  (Appendix 1A)  (10 min)
