Day 13
Global Issues
**This lesson requires that children have access to the Internet.
The ideas laid out here could easily be spread over two days depending
on how much time you choose to devote to them.
Students will acquire an awareness of:
- Water-borne illnesses and the need for clean water (Appendix
17).
- How and from where, people in a developing countries collect and
use their water by reading vignettes from peace corps, Water in Africa,
website www.peacecorps.gov/wws/water/africa/lessons.
- Have students fundraise in order to build a well in a developing
country (i.e. using organizations such as Sopar --
India or WaterCan -- Africa).
Contact either organization to acquire video, cd’s and educational

to the need for wells and quality drinking water. (15 min)
- Hand out Appendix 17 and discuss the different types of water borne
illnesses and the importance of having clean water. (20 min)
- Have students browse the Peace Corps resources site. www.peacecorps.gov/wws/water/africa/lessons The
top part of the page provides photos, the bottom provides vignettes
written by peace corps volunteers. (25 min)
Discuss with students the importance of helping other people around
the world. Both WaterCan and Sopar provide excellent suggestions on how
children can change the world by raising money to build wells in developing
