Global Issues

**This lesson requires that children have access to the Internet. The ideas laid out here could easily be spread over two days depending on how much time you choose to devote to them.

Students will acquire an awareness of:

  • Water-borne illnesses and the need for clean water (Appendix 17).
  • How and from where, people in a developing countries collect and use their water by reading vignettes from peace corps, Water in Africa, website www.peacecorps.gov/wws/water/africa/lessons.
  • Have students fundraise in order to build a well in a developing country (i.e. using organizations such as Sopar -- India or WaterCan -- Africa). Contact either organization to acquire video, cd’s and educational kits.

  • Watch Sopar Video or CD or WaterCan video. They introduce students to the need for wells and quality drinking water. (15 min)
  • Hand out Appendix 17 and discuss the different types of water borne illnesses and the importance of having clean water. (20 min)
  • Have students browse the Peace Corps resources site. www.peacecorps.gov/wws/water/africa/lessons The top part of the page provides photos, the bottom provides vignettes written by peace corps volunteers. (25 min)

Discuss with students the importance of helping other people around the world. Both WaterCan and Sopar provide excellent suggestions on how children can change the world by raising money to build wells in developing countries.
